Suzy McElrath is a doctoral candidate in the department of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, Twin-Cities where she studies and teaches undergraduate courses on crime and law and their intersection with gender, globalization, and human rights.

In her research, McElrath applies theories from the sociology of crime, law, and globalization to explain macro-level trends in the criminalization and perpetration of mass atrocities and gender-based violence. Her dissertation, a mixed-methods analysis of the implementation of national genocide laws, applies event-history and content analyses to an original cross-national dataset of national criminal codes, revealing national variation and temporal shifts in the legal meaning of genocide as atrocity crimes have become institutionalized in a global, multi-level regime for human rights accountability.
